Melissa's educational journey has been deeply rooted in her passion for both animal science and psychology, but it's her unwavering belief in the transformative power of equine-assisted interventions that truly sets her apart. Her journey began at the University of New Hampshire, where she earned her Associate’s degree in Applied Animal Science with a specialization in Equine Management. This foundational education laid the groundwork for her understanding of the profound connection between humans and horses.
Driven by her desire to merge her expertise in animal science with her passion for psychology, Melissa pursued a Bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University, graduating Cum Laude with a focus on child and adolescent development. It was during this time that she began to explore the therapeutic potential of equine-assisted interventions in healing trauma.
In 2017, Melissa became certified in the Eagala model, drawn to its innovative approach to utilizing horses as co-therapists in the healing process. She applied this model in South Carolina before bringing her expertise to Arizona, where she continues to work with diverse populations, including children, adults, military personnel, and their families, and those with trauma. Through her work, Melissa addresses a wide range of issues, with a particular focus on healing trauma through equine-assisted psychotherapy.
Driven by her commitment to advancing trauma-informed care, Melissa obtained certification as a Clinical Trauma Specialist-Addiction from the Trauma Institute, and a Clinical Trauma Professional II from Evergreen. She is also an active member of ARCH (ARenas for CHange), furthering her expertise in equine-assisted learning and healing with a specific focus on trauma recovery.
Melissa received her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Grand Canyon University, and is currently a licensed associate counselor. She remains steadfast in her conviction that horses possess a unique capacity to facilitate healing and personal growth, especially in the context of trauma recovery. Her approach is future-oriented and solution-focused, empowering individuals to transcend their past traumas and unlock their hidden strengths through the healing power of horses.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Melissa finds joy in spending quality time with her family, nurturing her love for horseback riding and the outdoors, and prioritizing her holistic well-being through fitness and mindfulness practices. Her dedication to healing trauma through the use of equine-assisted interventions permeates every aspect of her life, shaping both her professional endeavors and personal passions.
